Whether you are visiting on holidays or live here, taking the kids to the playground is one of the best free things to do and it is fun. It’s a great place for kids to interact with other kids and also for mums to meet mums. We have some brilliant parks around Coffs...
This week’s lovely local mum is Nicki Jeffery. She has lived in the area for more than seven years and is passionate about offering support for mums battling perinatal mental health issues.
Where and how long have you lived in the area and what do you love about it?
We have lived in Coffs Harbour for seven and a half years. I love walking around the headland and beaches, the beautiful climate, and my neighbourhood.
Tell us about yourself and your family
We are a family of five – Nathan (my husband), Matthew (seven year old son), Ethan (five year old son) and Gracie (cat). Nathan grew up in the city and I grew up in the country. We like where we live now.
What does a typical day look like for you?
My day starts with Bible reading and devotions, a morning prayer walk when I can, helping my boys with their morning routine, ironing a work shirt for my husband, and enjoying a smoothie on the way to school drop off.
My youngest son has just started school, so it is the first time I have been available full time as a primary school teacher. I am currently a casual teacher. If I don’t get called to work I play ladies tennis; spend time writing, blogging and building my author platform; do housework; cook or catch up with neighbours and friends.
Favourite park and why
Beachstone Café Sapphire playground. My boys love riding their bikes or scooters around the paths, climbing the pyramid, swinging on the swings or kicking a soccer ball. It’s a great place for a milkshake too!
Favourite thing to do with your bubs/kiddies and why
We like going on family bike rides. It’s great getting fresh air, sunshine and exercise. Busy boys burning energy! We also like ending up at McDonalds for a soft serve and a play.
Favourite restaurant or favourite night-spot and why
Greenhouse Tavern and Moonee Beach Tavern. These are large and spacious, the food is affordable, the venues are family friendly. My boys love the jumping castles, mini cinemas, fort (Greenhouse), climbing wall (Moonee Beach) and video games.
Favourite Mothers Group location
Burnside Play Group – Anglicare.
Work or Stay at Home Mum
A bit of both. I am a primary school teacher and a writer. My website is: www.nickijeffery.com
Motherly advice on how to stay sane
Self-care and connection with others.
Funny mum moment
As a toddler, my son took off his nappy and did a poo in his bedroom. Not only did he get poo on the carpet, but I found him playing cars, smearing poo up the walls!
What is your guilty pleasure?
What’s something not many people know about you?
I did a stint in the Army Reserve when I was at university.
Favourite local shop/online store or Instagram business
Eternal Waters Christian Bookshop and Gifts in Boulevard Arcade off Harbour Drive.
What’s the best product/service you can recommend since becoming a mum? (for baby/kids or you)
I recommend Burnside Play Group – Anglicare. It is such a healthy group to be involved in for mothers and their young children. Great support from an early childhood educator and her team. There is free play, craft, songs, educational talks, morning tea and excursions.
How have you changed since becoming a mum?
I think I have become more real, more empathetic and less perfectionistic.
What is the greatest challenge you have faced since becoming a mum?
Maternal mental illness – post natal depression.
Anything else you would like to share with us?
Being a mum can be lonely, and stepping back from your career can affect your confidence and self esteem. If you find yourself not coping, you are not alone. Up to one in ten women experience antenatal depression. More than one in seven new mums experience post natal depression.
“Encouraging Mums With Hope” is a community of Christian mums who are battling or have battled with their perinatal mental health. Whether or not you have a Christian faith, we welcome you into this caring group.
The goals of the “Encouraging Mums With Hope” Facebook group are:
1) To encourage and build each other up as we journey through motherhood together.
2) To lift up those who feel overwhelmed (as we all do at times).
3) To help mothers of the Christian faith who are battling maternal mental illness.
4) To inspire mothers with parenting tips, sharing experiences, practical articles and pick-me-ups.
** I am rewriting my manuscript to encourage mothers battling maternal mental illness. The goal is to have my book available at the end of 2018. Those interested can follow me on social media or visit my website and join my mailing list for updates. **
