  • What's On
  • Local Services

Looking for new Christmas traditions for your family?  Start the season of merry and bright with one of these festive, fun ideas.  We have compiled a list of 25 traditions that you can start with your kids this year.  I’m sure you will cherish them as much as we do!

  • Visit a Tree Farm – Start your family’s holiday festivities off right by bundling up and heading to a local Christmas tree farm to search for the perfect tree.  North Coast Christmas Trees are open for business from 1 December.
  • Advent Calendar – Start an Advent Calendar counting down the days until Christmas.
  • Christmas Books – The first year you do this, wrap 25 Christmas books and put them under the tree. Each night, let the kids unwrap a book and read it together, with the last book being read on Christmas. For each following year, just select a book each night to read.
  • Christmas Lights – Make it an adventure to find neighbourhoods that go all out on Christmas lights.
  • Ornament Giving – Give your children an ornament each year! Then when they leave home, they have an ornament to take with them. Take the kids shopping and let them choose an ornament and write the year on the bottom to know when they chose it. Ideally, try to choose ornaments that aren’t easily broken.
  • Baking with Friends and Family – Invite friends and family over for a baking day. Let the kids cut out the shapes of the cookies and enjoy decorating them.
  • Gingerbread Houses – It’s probably best that mom or dad put the gingerbread house together for the little ones. The kids will love decorating these houses with lollies!
  • Christmas Cards – With the number of Christmas cards we send, it feels like a production line to put together. We crank up the Christmas tunes and get the toddlers involved by letting them colour the envelopes.
  • Place a Gift under the Kmart wishing tree- then place the card you get on the tree.
  • Have the Christmas Photo every year of the whole family.
  • Write Letters to Santa – Also try and take a photocopy of your children’s letters to Santa each year and make a book out of them when they are older.
  • New PJs on Christmas Eve – Try and get a photo of all the kids together on Christmas Eve after they have opened their PJs and put them on. Christmas morning group photos don’t seem to work for some reason.
  • Create a holiday playlist – whether you are decorating the tree, preparing for a party, or just in the car. Get your family groove on with a customised holiday playlist. Get everyone to add their favourites, classics like ‘Jingle Bell Rock’ to Mariah Carey’s “All I want for Christmas is You’.
  • Christmas Yearbook – a simple yet perfect way to record your family’s life throughout the years. After the Christmas meal, ask your family and guests to take a couple of minutes to write in the Yearbook; from the excited youngster to your visiting relatives and elderly loved ones. It will be the beginning of a family tradition that just keeps getting better as the years go by.
  • Watching The Polar Express with hot chocolate on Christmas Eve and leaving a bell that looks like the one in the movie each year for each child to find on the plate we leave the biscuits and carrots on Christmas morning (and pretending we can’t hear the noise). The look on their faces is priceless!
  • Let the kids stay awake and take them to Midnight Mass
  • Christmas Caroling – Head along to one of the many Christmas Carol events around Coffs.
  • A stubby out for Santa, a bowl of milk and carrots for the reindeer and an old key for Santa to get in- to overcome the lack of chimney.
  • Make reindeer food out of dried oats and glitter and have the kids sprinkle it in the backyard on Christmas Eve.
  • Hang real candy canes on the tree while listening to Xmas music- then have mum read Christmas stories.
  • Have a Christmas day novelty Secret Santa- everyone buys a $10 silly present and draw out of the hat to decide who gets what.
  • Put a gold/coin surprise in a Christmas pudding for someone to find.
  • Have a family game of water volleyball/cricket (or whatever) after Christmas lunch.
  • Help out a charity by donating some money or your time for their cause, Christmas can be a hard time of year for some.
  • Hide the last presents on Christmas day and make clues as to where your kids can find them.
